Cigarette smoking not only causes lung cancer but also causes
about 1 in every 5 deaths in the United States each year and is the main
preventable cause of death and illness in the United States. Smoking harms more
or less every organ in the body like the heart, blood vessels, lungs, eyes,
mouth, reproductive organs, bones, bladder, and digestive organs. Today, our
focus will be on effects of smoking on heart and blood vessels.
The effect of smoking on the heart can lead to cardiac
emergencies on the part of individuals like a sudden cardiac arrest or heart
attack. A victim would require immediate treatment for survival and the only
form of appropriate treatment in this regard is proper application of the CPR
techniques (a combination of chest compressions and rescue breaths). Obtaininga CPR certification Tampa is the
only way that can make you well-prepared in performing the procedures
efficiently in real-life situations.
If you belong to the Tampa region in Florida, you can sign up
for a program at the AHA accredited CPR Tampa where certified instructors
conduct the classes.

Smoking and
Heart and Blood Vessels
Chemicals in tobacco smoke harm your blood cells which can also
damage the function of your heart and the structure and function of your blood
vessels. This damage increases your risk of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis
is a disease in which a waxy substance called plaque builds up in the arteries.
The plaque hardens over a period of time and narrows the arteries which limits
the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your organs and other parts of your body.
Building up of plaque in the coronary arteries causes coronary heart disease
which can lead to chest pain, heart attack, heart failure, arrhythmias, or even
death over a period of time.
It is heart disease that mainly leads to the occurrence of a
heart attack or cardiac arrest. The biggest risk factors of heart disease
includes high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Apart from that, smoking is
another major risk factor for heart disease. When combined with other risk
factors—such as unhealthy blood cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, and
overweight or obesity—smoking further increases the risk of heart disease.
Smoking is a major risk factor for peripheral artery disease
(P.A.D.) as well. P.A.D. is a condition in which plaque builds up in the
arteries that carry blood to the head, organs, and limbs. People who have
P.A.D. are at increased risk for heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
